In the early 1980's, South Beach was considered a very poor and blighted area. Today, however, it is one of the wealthiest and most prosperous residential and commercial areas in the country. Due in part to the huge exposure provided by the hit TV show Miami Vice, which began filming in Miami Beach in 1983, the late 80's saw a large influx of fashion industry professionals moving into the area.
